Any applicant whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Pearson Test of English (PTE), or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.

Minimum Score Requirements and English Courses

A minimum score of 70 is required to be considered for admission. Students with a score of 20 or more in any sub-section will not be required to take an English assessment for that section. If a student has a score of 90 or above, they will not be required to take take an English assessment in any section, even if they receive less than 20 in a section.

The academic departments always reserve the right to require an English assessment from any applicant.

Below are the minimum total scores by test type, required for admission consideration. For most IIT programs, any section subscore that falls within the minimum indicated will determine which Proficiency of English as a Second Language (PESL) Assessment Exam you will be required to take. Scores higher than the total minimum indicated will be exempt from the assessment exam unless required by the academic department. Stuart School of Business follows a different English language assessment policy under the Professional Communication Advancement (PCA) program. Learn more about Stuart’s PCA program.

Students are required to register for and complete the first of any such necessary English language courses during the first regular semester of enrollment at IIT. By accepting admission to the university, the student is agreeing to take any additional English courses IIT deems necessary.

*Those with a total score higher than the minimum total score indicated may not be required to take the PESL Assessment Exam. Students in Stuart School of Business do not participate in PESL Assessment. Learn more about the PCA program for Stuart students.

Resubmission of new English test scores or a certificate/transcript from an English language program is not permissible. To register for the assessment exam, visit the PESL assessment page.

Upon completion of the assessment you will receive the results, which will indicate if you have been waived out of the English course requirement or which course you are expected to register for during your first regular semester at IIT. If you have more than one English prerequisite requirement, you will be expected to register for the course(s) in subsequent semesters until completed.  Please note that none of these courses count toward your degree at IIT; however, the fact that they each carry 3 credits will permit you to take a lighter technical load (6 credits instead of 9 credits) in your first semester while you are improving your English skills. For more information regarding the assessment exam please visit the PESL Assessment FAQs.

If your English Assessment exam indicates that you must register for two or three English courses, you will have the opportunity to take a new assessment exam in the subsequent semester when it is offered.

Your admission specialist in the Office of Graduate Admission will make this determination with your academic department upon review of your application file.

If you believe you meet this qualification, you must contact us to request this waiver.  Once you have uploaded your complete application materials for verification we will review your request.
